Get Hooked on Fishing in Wasaga Beach!

One of the best fishing locations in Ontario is right here in Wasaga Beach. The variety of species that make Nottawasaga Bay and the Nottawasaga River their home is uncommon for the rest on the province. As the ice retreats, the mouth of the River is bustling with fishermen seeking whitefish, rainbow trout, brown trout and salmon.

As the spring arrives, walleye begin their migration into the area.  Night trolling in late May on the Nottawasaga River has produced trophies.  Nearing the end of June, smallmouth bass become the species most talked about, as they are renowned for being the best pound-for-pound sport fish in the country.

August is the month fishermen can experience Chinook, coho or pink salmon. The thrill of fighting one of these bigger species can last 20 to 30 minutes and have you wondering whether your strength will last. As the fall colours appear, the rainbow trout and salmon once again have anglers spending countless hours waiting for the chance to claim a victorious story or spin the yarn of "the one that got away".

The Nottawasaga River also offers excellent canoeing, with a one-day outing taking you past the steep cliffs of Wasaga's inland sand dunes. Also come to visit our great Town and participate in the annual Georgian Triangle Trout Derby held each April, and don’t forget to come back for the Wasaga Beach Fish and Game Club’s Annual Rainbow Trout Derby in September.

As a responsible angler, you should be familiar with the seasons, sizes and limits of each species you wish to fish. This information is contained in the 2008 Sport Fishing Regulations summary, available at the Minsitry of Natural Resources offices and most sport fishing stores. Canadian residents between the ages of 17 and 65 require a sport-fishing license to angle in Ontario waters.

“Catch and Release” is encouraged to help maintain healthy fish populations for years to come.

  • The Guide to Eating Ontario Sport fish shows that Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) has the cleanest fish of all the Great Lakes.
  • You can continue to fish on the shores of the Montgomery Rapids when the river begins to freeze in winter.
  • A valid fishing License is needed.
  • You must obey the regulations for recreational fishing.
  • You can contact the Wasaga Beach Fish and Game Club Inc. - www.wbfgc.ca - for a current fishing report. Weather and water temperature can dramatically alter the fishing conditions.
  • You can find information about Ontario fishing at the government website: www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/pubs/pubmenu.html.
